A Swiss orbital mission

CHESS is a Swiss space mission to monitor the Earth’s upper atmosphere using two nano-satellites.

Discover the smallest mass spectrometer ever

CHESS is a Swiss space mission to monitor the Earth’s upper atmosphere with 2 mass spectrometers aboard 2 nano-satellites. Made at Bern University, it’s a world class gas analyser, and an outstanding piece of technology.

Nation wide project

CHESS is a student project, supervised by well-known teachers and universities.

Main payload

Universität Bern is famous around the world for its cutting-edge mass spectrometers. Each CHESS satellites will receive one CubeSat TOF, a miniaturized version of the regular mass spectrometers.

Second payload

Analyzing the atmosphere is possible with the CubeSat TOF, but to be accurate in the measurements, we need a very precise positioning system: a GNSS made by the ETH team.

Flight Software

One of the critical elements in a satellite is the flight software. HE-ARC brings its long experience in embedded software development into the CHESS mission.

On Board Computer

HES-SO students and teachers work on solutions for the satellites' brain, a state-of-the-art nano computer interfacing all the other subsystems.

Ground Station

It's cool to send a satellite into space, but it's better to get all the data back on earth! HSLU takeover this strategic part of the project, using its experience with SwissCube, the first swiss satellite in history.

Coordination + Satellite

The EPFL team coordinate the administrative and financial part. Also, all the other subsystems (electric power, structure...) will be located design and build at the EPFL.
